“The first draft is black and white. Editing gives the story color.” – Emma Hill
At Shadow Ink Press, we feel that one of the most important elements of a successfully published novel begin and ends with careful consideration to the content. As the author you have complete control over the plot and characters developed within your stories, however, it is often the simple and most powerful tool of professional proof-reading that is overlooked.
At Shadow Ink Press we offer our services to ensure that the story you want told is released into the publishing world with minimal grammatical and spelling errors as well as favourable punctuation. We are an Australian publishing house, and therefore edit within the parameters of "English UK or English Australian" to ensure the novel is presented in a format that meets English standards.
What is proof-reading?
Proof-reading comes in many varieties, but essentially it should identify any typographical, grammatical, or punctuation errors within a 'typeset' document. When a novel is ready for print, the proof-reader will ensure that there are no irregularities in pagination and layout as well as fixing or alerting the author to any of the above mentioned grammatical errors. this will ensure that the novel/document is ready to go to print.
Process of Proof-reading ...
1. Check for correct pagination and page layout (e.g. titles in correct positions, no missing page numbers, formatting looks correct).
2. First read through - Ensures spelling and word choices are correct (e.g. there/their/they're), punctuation errors are limited (missing commas, confusion with hyphens, correct apostrophes), formatting issues, and stylistic consistency is maintained.
3. Final read through - Ensuring all inconsistencies and errors have been removed, no missing words and text flows freely ready for publication.
Shadow Ink Press have two proof-readers on hand to double-check your document. The costs incurred are $0.03 AUD/word with a 20% deposit to be paid up front. Working time is worked out on a case-by-case basis and dependent on total word count and deadline required.
